Collection: Robert Casper

Robert Casper (1928-2012) was born in New York City and studied at the Art Student's League and Queens College with Cameron Booth, followed by extensive training under Hans Hofmann at his New York school and Provincetown summer program. He earned his Master of Arts in Art Education from Columbia University and worked in animation from 1954-1958, including time at UPA in Burbank as an assistant animator before establishing his studio on Ash Ave. in Flushing, NY.

Casper's lifelong passion centered on painting, form, and structure, influenced by the presence of great European artists like Mondrian, Leger, and Chagall who lived in New York during World War II. This exposure to worldly art shaped his focus on pictorial construction and modern art fundamentals, culminating in his 1985 treatise "On the Essence of Pictorial Form," which outlined his artistic philosophy and approach to form and structure that dominated his thoughts throughout his career.
