Remo Farruggio

Italian American, 1905–1981

Antonio Farruggio (born Palermo, Italy) immigrated to the United States in 1918 and became a U.S. citizen in 1924. He studied at the National Academy of Design, the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and the New York School of Industrial Art. A WPA artist during the late 1930s, Farruggio earned his first solo exhibition at New York's renowned Julien Levy Gallery through the Federal Art Project and later taught art in Detroit and Portland. Based in New York City and a longtime summer resident of Monhegan Island, Maine, Farruggio exhibited extensively in the United States, Mexico, and Italy. His work was included in American Paintings Today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1950) and the International Watercolor Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum (1955), securing his reputation as an accomplished modern American painter.
