Isaac Monteiro was born in Antwerp, Belgium to Jewish parents. During the Second World War the family escaped Nazi-occupied Europe, settling in Brazil in 1941, where Monteiro was raised. After the war, he studied art in Rio de Janeiro, gaining Brazilian citizenship in 1958. In 1964 he immigrated to the USA, becoming a US citizen in 1972. He lived and worked in New York city and died in Freeport, New Jersey in 2008.
