About the Artist
Kenneth Munowitz
American, 1935–1977
Kenneth Munowitz was an American artist and children’s book illustrator born in the Bronx, New York. He also served as art director at Horizon magazine. His highly stylized human and animal figures—bulky, rounded, and expressive—combine a gentle, whimsical quality with a powerful emotional presence. Munowitz illustrated biblical stories in collaboration with writer Charles L. Mee, Jr., creating images filled with warmth, quiet drama, and imagination. Though his career was tragically brief, his paintings, particularly those created in the years before his death, have been praised for their distinctive visual language and “spellbinding intensity.”
