About the Artist
American, 1926–2023
Sonia Chusit was a painter and watercolorist whose work gained regional and national recognition in the mid-20th century. She studied at New York’s Music and Art High School, trained with Rufino Tamayo at the Brooklyn Museum, and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Cooper Union. Her work was exhibited at institutions including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Rackham Gallery in Ann Arbor. Chusit won a Michigan Watercolor Society Award for her painting The Sculptor, which toured the Midwest as part of the Society’s traveling exhibition.
