Lawrence Philp (b. 1949, New York City) is an American artist whose parents immigrated from Jamaica in 1920. He earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the University of Michigan. Early influences on his work include Bob Thompson, whose vivid color, flattened figures, and reinterpretation of Renaissance painting deeply resonated with Philp, as well as Mahler B. Ryder, who encouraged his distinctive approach to color relationships.
