Carl AshbyCarl Ashby
Carl Ashby (1914–2004), painter and printmaker, was born in Hurley, New Mexico on March 2, 1914. He worked as an artist for the Civilian Conservation Corps before attending the University of Utah, where he received his degree in 1937.He relocated to New York City shortly thereafter and married artist Estelle Grey in 1938. Eleanor BurnetteEleanor Burnette
Eleanor Burnette (1944–2020) was a Black Chicago-born sculptor and painter whose work explored the spiritual and historical legacies of the African diaspora, particularly the Middle Passage. Trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago State University, and the Johnson Atelier, her textured, symbol-laden compositions evoke both ancestral memory and modern expression.

Estelle Grey Ashby (1911-1994) moved to New York City as a young woman to pursue fashion design, studying at the Traphagen School of Fashion. She met her future husband, Carl Ashby, while both were students at the Art Students League of New York, and they married in 1938. Ashby worked as a fashion designer throughout her career.
