About the Artist
Gayle Portnow Halperin ( 1939-2020) Born on November 30, 1939 in Brooklyn, New York. A graduate of Pratt Institute class of '61, and long-time Manhattan resident, Halperin was an innovative sportswear and knitwear designer who helped revolutionize women's fashion in the 1960's. Her personal sportswear line, Snazzi, which launched at Max's Kansas City, introduced \flip skirts\ and \split skirts\, which allowed women to move more actively and freely. Snazzi's tag line was \it moves\. Her clothing graced the covers of Glamour, Seventeen and Ingenue and often featured in Women's Wear Daily. She was a passionate photographer, documenting the gentrification of the Upper West Side and the Lower East Side through the 1980s, and helped landmark the Church of St. Paul and St. Andrews on West 86th Street. She was an activist and an inspiration. Halperin was an accomplished poet and a published author. Notable books include \Fog, and Other Atmospheric Conditions\ and \Food, However Peripheral.\
