American, 1897–1985
Pleasant Ray McIntosh (1897-1985) was an American painter and educator whose career spanned more than six decades. Raised in southern Indiana, he began drawing at a young age and went on to study at Bradley University and the Art Institute of Chicago under Robert Henri. He held key teaching and leadership roles at institutions including Ohio State University, Bradley University, and the University of Florida, shaping art education throughout the Midwest and beyond. Despite his academic career, McIntosh remained deeply committed to painting, producing a wide body of work inspired by travels in Europe, Mexico, Florida, and the Caribbean. Known for his vibrant color and expressive approach, he continued to innovate throughout his life, adapting his techniques as needed. His work reflects a lifelong pursuit of capturing the essence of his subjects with clarity and feeling.
